The festival that began in 2008 with three hundred festival-goers has fast become India’s major ‘World Music’ festival attracting over 15,000 revelers and a line up that’s keen on exposing us to a world outside mainstream electronica whether it’s Bloc Party or our very own Madboy Mink. SulaFest is now in its 11th year and bursting at its seams with music; here’s a look at the stellar SulaFest 2018 lineup.
Electro Swing here I come. What’s Electro Swing? It’s quite likely the only song you got up and did a little jig to because of its melody, and the only one that sounds like it has a few instruments. And it’s quite likely that it’s probably from Parov Stelar, the pioneer of the genre and this year’s headliners at SulaFest 2018.
The Austrian five-member band Bauchklang (literally means ‘belly sound’) is what happens when electronic music meets Pitch Perfect and we’re hoping they do their entire repertoire from Le Mans and Ray. This ‘vocal group collective’ are constantly redefining beat-boxing sounds – We honestly couldn’t believe some of the sounds didn’t come out of a keyboard.
This is the band we’re prepared to stand in queue for. Country meets hipster, the song Follow reminds me the Fleetwood Mac’s Chain in places and so does their aesthetic; folksy summer music you can sip lemonade to, or rather in our case, lots of wine.
This is another band to shimmy those hips to, no really, they often feature belly dancers in their live shows. Known as the ‘beast from the middle east’, they play exotic mix of Balkan percussion, Mediterranean surf rock, ska & swing. It’s chalk to Crystal Fighter’s cheese and that’s what we love about the SulaFest 2018 lineup.
Representing Bollywood and sounds from our own shores is Amit Trivedi, he of the Dev D fame even though it’s quite unfair to still use that to introduce him when he’s had many large successes to his name including our favorite which include his sessions at Coke Studio.
EDM and more …
Ravers needn’t worry because the line up never strays too far from dance music to suit both the lounger and the jumper. Bondi, the live electronic act from Berlin, will set you up with laid back grooves that will have the ocean lapping at your ears, while our very own 8 Bit Culprit will be serving up some serious techno right alongside Stefano Richetta, the man behind one of Amsterdam’s most famous techno organizations, Click Records.
While the schedule isn’t up yet, but it probably matters not since you’re going to be camping out in the middle of vineyards right where the action is. SulaFest 2018 tickets and packages are available on Eventraveler.
