As the Shanghai Rolex Masters tournament kicks off this week we look at five reasons why you should make a trip to Shanghai to attend it:

  1. Biggest tennis tournament in Asia
The only ATP 1000 event outside US and Europe, the Shanghai Rolex Masters is by far the most prestigious men’s tennis tournament in the continent. Since the number of ATP 1000 events looks unlikely to go beyond its current figure of nine, at least in the foreseeable future, Shanghai Rolex Masters would remain your best chance of catching all the top players at one event in Asia. This is doubly so because Shanghai Rolex Masters is the favorite event of the players. So much so, that the event has been voted by them as the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Tournament of the Year every year since its inception in 2009. Players love everything ranging from the wonderful facilities, the Asian hospitality and the fact that they are in Shanghai. If you needed only one reason to visit Shanghai Rolex Masters it would have to be this one!
  1. Spectacular venue
A truly memorable event deserves a truly spectacular venue and the Qi Zhong Tennis Center definitely delivers on that front. While it may not have the history of Wimbledon’s Center Court or the sheer size of US Open’s Arthur Ashe Stadium this arena is as much of an architectural marvel as it is visually appealing. The Flower Stadium, as it is popularly known, has a steel roof with eight petal-shaped pieces that together resemble Shanghai’s city flower, the blooming Magnolia. The roof takes eight minutes to open or close since eight is believed to be the most auspicious number by the Chinese. The stadium can therefore host both indoor and outdoor matches without the occasionally erratic Shanghai weather getting in the way. The “coliseum” shape of the Qi Zhong Tennis Center further adds to the viewing experience, creating a sense of unity between the players and the spectators.
  1. Excitement of the final stretch of the season
The Shanghai Rolex Masters marks the finale of the three week Asian swing of the ATP calendar. With less than a month between this event and the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, the big players compete here with a heightened sense of urgency to gain valuable points for a chance to finish amongst the top-eight players in the world. The event not only plays a big part in determining who will make the final cut in the year but also impacts which player could end the year as the no.1 ranked man in the world.
  1. Entertainment outside of tennis
The Qi Zhong Tennis Center will not only provide you with top-class tennis during the tournament but also present you with live musical performances by leading Chinese and international artistes. Shanghai Rolex Masters 2013, for example, had guitar legend Andy Summers of Police fame perform.
  1. Thrill of being in Shanghai
Shanghai is one of the world’s most dynamic cities offering best in class culinary, nightlife and shopping experiences. So after you have had your share of watching the most celebrated tennis players in the world battle it out you can venture out into the city and soak in its diverse and multiple offerings.
