So yes, Sunburn has shifted to Pune. Instead of listening to music with a sea breeze garland around your neck, you will have to trudge to yet another enclosed Shamiana in a ground somewhere and witness a fashion show parade complete with a thousand flower headbands. Or, you could attend the Goa International Jazz Live Festival that runs from the 26th -27th of November at the Stone Water Eco Resort at Santarem Beach and listen to the sound of experimental, up-tempo, funky celebration of new age jazz!

The one name in the lineup that has really caught my imagination is Yuichiro Tokuda Ralyzzdig, an award-winning band from Japan that is being hailed as ‘the cutting edge of present progressive jazz.’ I am listening to the fugue of dissonant Saxophone and big brassy sounds as I write this- gorgeous. But the Tam de Villiers Quartet from France with the British born Tam de Villiers at the helm with his Guitar along with David Prez at Tenor Saxophone, Frédéric Chiffoleau – Double Bass and Karl Jannuska at the Drums, delivers the contemporary eclectic the festival promises by drawing on a melting pot of influences. What begins as a classical jazz piece soon blends into rocky twangs and trance like melodies – resolutely idiosyncratic, as their profile suggests.

One of the stars of the show, in my opinion, is the WorldService Project from the UK. Matthew Wright from Jazzwise writes this about their live performances, ‘Like Downton Abbey run by anarchists, the band is a mesmerising combination of brutality and dark humour…The razor-sharp rhythmic edges are polished, the ensemble is painfully slick, and you can smell the rubber burning from their stylistic handbrake turns.’ The Guardian calls them, ‘…stompingly raw and punky…a riotously entertaining live-band…highly creative’. Their single Fuming Duck is going to sound insane when played live.

My personal favorite- because I like a little vocal myself, is Malika Tirolien from Canada. She’s was a lead in Cirque Du Soleil’s La Nouba and was spotted by Michael League of Snarky Puppy and invited to perform on the Grammy winning release, Snarky Puppy’s Family Dinner. With a voice like molten gold, her music is a blend of smooth jazz, soft R&B and a dash of lounge, reminiscent of the French jazz sisters, Les Nubians. Here’s hoping she performs ‘I’m not the one.’
