Stop At: Chartwell Mapleton Road, Westerham TN16 1PS England

Chartwell is approximately 1.5 hours from London. You will have a personal guide to show you around the House and Grounds. Hear the history of the estate and how Sir Winston Churchill came to buy the property without his wife's knowledge and then live here from 1922 until 1965.

Chartwell is a perfectly preserved time capsule containing all original items that belonged to the great man and his family. Winston Churchill once remarked "A day away from Chartwell is a day wasted"

Your guide will make sure you see all the interesting parts of the estate that highlight the personal side of Churchill and his family. The brick walls laid by Sir Winston himself, and the cottage he built for his daughter Mary. The sheer amount of water features on the estate show his great love for ponds, swimming pools and nature.

But of course behind this great man was a very special woman Clementine Churchill. Her Rose beds and flower Gardens are wonderfully maintained by the staff, and her touch is unmistakable throughout the house. Visitors can enjoy the new exhibition focusing on Clementine Churchill and will come away realising that with out Clementine history could have played out very differently.

The former guest rooms now contain a small museum displaying some of the gifts and honours given to Churchill. The adjoining rooms contain his personal Uniforms and favourite hats.

Your guide will be on hand to point out items of special interest, and answer any questions you have about the estate.

After spending as much time as you like in the house, it will be time to visit Sir Winston Churchill's Art Studio. A place of utmost importance to him. He took up painting at the age of 40, and painted over 500 paintings during his lifetime. Here you will learn about his life as a painter, and see more than 100 of his original paintings.

Chartwell is a special place, so for your visit make sure you are in safe hands with a guide that knows the estate inside out, and loves sharing his knowledge of Sir Winston Churchill's remarkable life.

Richard was an excellent guide/host! We learned so much more than expected on his tour. Thanks for doing an outstanding job of both presenting information and listening to our questions, comments and experiences! You are a wealth of information and it shows how much you respect Mr. Churchill and his Legacy...Thanks so very much, Laurel and Tony Martinez, California

Excellent. Richard is very knowledgeable and great company. Thoroughly recommended to all. Chartwell itself is fascinating and gave us a real feel for how Churchill lived.

Richard was an informative, delightful and engaging tour leader who knows his subject thoroughly. He is a fan of Churchill and his enthusiasm for Churchill and Chartwell make both come alive. We highly recommend Richard and this tour and will seek out others he leads during future visits.

While we've had numerous tour guides on our various trips abroad, I would have to say that Richard is the very best. He is engaging, personable, and extremely knowledgeable, and my wife and I greatly enjoyed spending the day with him. Richard put together a memorable visit to Chartwell, with a stop at the Biggin Hill (WW2 airfield) museum. Our excursion with Richard was definitely a highlight of our visit to the UK. Richard's knowledge of Churchill is most impressive (and I speak as one who has read many books about, and by, the great man). It was a joy to "talk Churchill" with him as we strolled the beautiful Chartwell grounds and toured the home of Sir Winston. In addition, while in transit to and from Chartwell, we discussed with Richard some his other tours, including Dickens and Jane Austen, and his knowledge of those literary giants is incredible. On our next visit to England we will definitely contact Richard to set up a walking tour of Dickens' London. In sum, spending the day with Richard was a wonderful experience, and I recommend Richard's Tours with great enthusiasm.

My sister, good friend, and I took Richard’s Jane Austen tour on a Thursday and his Stonehenge/Bath tour the next day. We had such a wonderful time that we asked if he was available on Monday, our last day in England. He had a tour booked but, amazingly for us, that tour was cancelled. My sister wanted to visit Chartwell and although I did, too, I also wanted Hampton Court Palace. We asked Richard if we could possibly have both in one day and he very obligingly agreed to a custom tour to satisfy us both. I’d be hard-pressed to say which location we enjoyed more but the three of us are agreed on the fact that Richard is a terrific tour guide. Every detail was carefully planned in advance so there was no rushing from one place to the next. Richard is a careful, safe driver and his car was immaculate. The breadth of his knowledge is incredible. We spent three days with him on entirely different tours yet he was always able to answer all our questions. In fact, I contacted Richard a month later with a question about identifying something I’d taken a photo of but couldn’t recall what it was. He responded promptly and knew exactly what I was referring to. It would behoove anyone planning a small group visit to one of the locations Richard’s Tours offers to choose him. We cannot speak highly enough of him. Should he ever visit our neck of the woods we would be happy to introduce him to our families and then take him on a guided tour!

What do you say after the best day ever, Richard was a first class guide and so knowledgeable it was just unbelievable. Chartwell house is a special place but Richard made it more special. We found things out that you would have missed if going on your own. I bought this as a birthday gift for my husband, but I got as much enjoyment out of it. A great journey to and from Chartwell thank you again Richard,we would highly recommend a day out with you.Dorothy and Robson johnson

As a history buff, I looked forward to this private tour of Chartwell, home of Winston Churchill. Having read several biographies of this great man, I had many questions for Richard, our tour guide, and he answered all of them and more. Richard and I talked about Churchill on the way to Chartwell, while there and on the way back to London. It was the highlight of my trip to England!

Early June was the perfect time to visit Chartwell because the flowers were beautiful and the house and studio were comfortable. The furnishings, books, art and memorabilia make this an incredible tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and kept the pace and schedule just right. If you are interested in Winston Churchill this tour is a must see.

After a slight hic-cup being picked up the day went very smoothly. Richard, our guide, was very knowledgeable about Winston Churchill and the monarchy and made the trip out to the house enjoyable. He took us into the town and we were able to get pictures of the Churchill statue. A most enjoyable day.
