Stop At: Newbury, Newbury, Berkshire, England

We visit several other villages which are a secret to surprise you that have featured in the series. Leaving the villages behind us we start to head cross country to Highclere Castle. This journey takes around 50 minutes as Highclere is 40 miles away from our last Cotswold village. We will stop in the countryside for lunch (own expense) at an old English Pub. We arrive at Highclere Castle after lunch

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Highclere Castle Highclere Park, Highclere RG20 9RN England

Your guide will explain all there is to know about the Castle’s history, plus the Downton Locations you will see before you enter the rooms. Later in the afternoon why not treat yourself to a cream tea before we return to London. This tour will not only show you the life of Lord and Lady Grantham but it will also treat you all like Lords and Ladies for the day.

We had an amazing time touring the countryside including all of the Downton Abbey hotspots. Half of us had never seen the show and they loved it as much as the rest of us. David was a great driver. He had so much great knowledge and made our day driving around exceptional. It was just a perfect day. Can’t wait to come back when we can spend more time in the country!

I want to start off with the positives. Our guide, Andrew, was at our hotel right on time and he was wonderful!! He was funny and very knowledgeable about Downton. Considering we were with him over 8 hrs, he made the long drive enjoyable. Visiting the little town where Downton was filmed was very nice, but very small. The church was lovely. The negative surprise came when I said I’m ready to go to Highclere Castle and was told it would be at least a 90 min drive from the village. Wow!! My husband & I were shocked because it took a long time to get to the church and then we had to be in the car another 90 mins just to see the castle. Then the long drive back to London after spending less than 2 hrs at the Castle and castle grounds. I’m so grateful for Andrew. He was very interesting to talk to. I think the Downton Tour as advertised is very misleading. It says nothing about the distance between the castle and the town. We didn’t realize that most of our trip would be spent in the taxi. It was a very expensive trip and I felt like the company wasn’t completely honest with how much time you would be in the taxi. I’m glad I did it, but not sure I would recommend it without explaining what you would actually be doing all day.

Andrew was obviously a Downton Abbey fan and shared a lot of trivia. He was also exceedingly knowledgeable about the actual history of the filming spots that we stopped to see. He was very accommodating and helpful when one of our passengers got car sick. Just can’t say enough positive things about this tour. We were promised a good tour guide and Andrew did not disappoint! We loved making this trip in the black cab. It truly was a fabulous, VIP experience!
